Sericulture Exploration 001

Silk tafetta cocoon cape and silk crepe gown handcrafted by Asata Maisé Beeks

August 2026

The first ensemble of, hopefully, many to explore my affinity for sericulture: the cultivation of silkworms to produce silk. I lean into a more formal silhouette to show my respect for the numerous layers of labor required to produce such luxurious textiles. There is contrast, not only in color and texture, but also in shape, as the cape represents the sacrificial silkworm’s cocoon, which eventually becomes a product for human consumption.

For this project, I unveil a renewed sense of self with techniques that showcase an increased confidence in my garment construction skills. Panels, pin tucks, and soft structural details were captured by Renee, who engulfed us in nourishing food, grounding incense, and intoxicating melodies throughout the studio day. The warm, earthen color palette cut through the brisk chill of San Jose’s unusual late spring frost.

A phone call between Alexandra Deutsch and the late André Leon Talley eventually led to my invitation to this installation. The opportunity to honor my lineage, the incomparable Anne Lowe, and the horticulturally obsessed H.F. DuPont was precisely what I needed in a self-inflicted creative ebb. Each garment, an ode to my grandmothers, allowed me to step out of the complacency of my comfort zone. Couture techniques forced me to slow down and appreciate capabilities otherwise taken for granted.

In hindsight, this project is a clear manifestation of two parts of myself in conflict. A newfound world of visibility and responsibility creates tension with my instinct to simply create. The limited production of Baguette Bag was intended to meet the vicious demand of what was expected of a budding designer. The patchwork dress, hand-cut from sweaters sourced from The Salvation Army, satisfied a deeper desire. Gracefully captured by Lauren’s distinctive eye of intimacy, I unknowingly displayed my vulnerability to the world.

This project represents my naivety and curiosity about myself and the world. I observed how my senses were heightened in new environments as I timidly dared to take up space. Balance was discovered through the garments — some soft and fluid while others were rigid and practical. Fortunately, both urban and island welcomed what I decided to create thousands of miles and many months before landing there.
